Learning Dutch for work? Your employer may be able to support you

by Regina Coeli

You may work mainly in English and still notice that Dutch matters.

Perhaps colleagues switch to Dutch during lunch or before a meeting. Maybe you want to communicate more confidently with Dutch-speaking clients or simply feel more at home in your working environment.

If better Dutch would help you in your work, it is worth discussing this with your employer. Language training can be more than a personal ambition: it can be part of your professional development.

Start with your goal

Before thinking about budgets or courses, ask yourself what you want to be able to do differently.

For example:

  • take part more easily in conversations with Dutch colleagues;
  • contribute more confidently when Dutch is spoken in meetings;
  • communicate more independently with customers or suppliers;
  • build stronger relationships in a Dutch working environment.

A clear goal makes it easier to explain why learning Dutch matters to you and to your organisation.

Talk to your employer

Your employer may have a learning or development budget that can be used for language training. There may also be possibilities to learn during working hours or take study leave.

The arrangements differ between organisations, so ask your manager or HR department what is possible.

When you do, focus on the result you want to achieve rather than simply asking whether there is a budget for a Dutch course.

For example:

‘I would like to participate more confidently in conversations with Dutch colleagues. Improving my Dutch would help me collaborate more easily. Could the organisation support me with this development goal?’

Choose training that fits what you want to achieve

Once your goal is clear, look for a programme that helps you reach it.

At Regina Coeli, your Dutch training starts with your personal objectives. During the intake, we look at your current level, the situations in which you need Dutch and the progress you want to make.

Your programme is then tailored around those goals, with personal guidance and plenty of individual speaking practice.

So your training is not simply about learning more Dutch. It is about being able to use the language with greater confidence and effectiveness when it matters.
