Keep your language skills fresh with fun five-minute challenges

door Regina Coeli

Want to give your brain a little workout during the holidays? These short language challenges are a fun way to stay sharp—even when you're relaxing.

If you've done a training with Regina Coeli before, you already have a solid base in your target language. But maybe you still struggle sometimes to find the right words. That’s normal! These quick exercises help you stay active in the language without having to study hard.

Each challenge takes just five minutes, but gives your brain a useful boost.

1. The word hunt
Go for a walk and spot five local words—on signs, posters, menus or product labels. Don’t know what they mean? Look them up or ask a local. Then, try to use them in a sentence. That way, you’ll really remember them.

2. One mini-conversation a day
Speak to someone every day—a waiter, shopkeeper or hotel staff. Ask a simple question like “What’s the local speciality?” or “When does the next bus leave?” Then try to repeat the answer in your own words.

3. The music challenge
Listen to songs in your target language. Pick one and write down the chorus. What does it mean? Do you hear any words you know? Music helps with rhythm, pronunciation, and memory.

4. One sentence a day
Write one sentence each day about what you did. Keep it simple and personal: “I went swimming today.” After a week, you’ll have a short language diary—and see your progress too.

5. Read the menu
At a restaurant, read the menu carefully. Pick one word you don’t know and look it up. Next time, you’ll recognise it! Menus are great for learning food words and cultural phrases.

6. Watch and guess
Watch five minutes of local TV. Try to guess what it’s about. Which words do you understand? What can you guess from the pictures? Then search online to check if you were right.

7. The magazine puzzle
Buy a local magazine and browse through it. Read the headlines and guess the meaning of new words. You’ll learn a lot—without even noticing.

Turn it into a game

Do one challenge a day or let your travel buddy pick one at random. It’s a fun way to keep learning—while staying in holiday mode.
