Discover the Netherlands this summer: Tips for expats

door Regina Coeli

If you are an expat, summer is the ideal time to explore the Netherlands. There is plenty to do all over the country, and you will get to pick up a thing or two about Dutch culture and history. Read on for tips for an unforgettable summer in the Netherlands!

Visit the Wadden Islands

Breathtaking nature, quiet beaches and charming villages await you on the Wadden Islands, which include Texel and Terschelling. Each island has its own character and highlights, such as Texel’s historic lighthouse and Terschelling’s sweeping dunes. Did you know that the Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Cycle through the Veluwe

The Veluwe is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands, offering vast forests, expansive heathlands and moors, and shape-shifting sand drifts. You can take beautiful cycling trips there and possibly even spot wildlife, such as deer and wild boar.

Explore historic cities such as Utrecht and Maastricht

Dutch cities have no shortage of rich history, striking architecture and cosy terraces, and that includes Utrecht and Maastricht. Climb the Dom tower in Utrecht for stunning views of the city or visit the Basilica of Saint Servatius in the heart of Maastricht. Discover the historical and cultural richness of the Netherlands and learn about regional differences within the country.

Take a boat trip through the canals of Amsterdam (or Den Bosch)

A boat trip through Amsterdam’s canals offers great views of the city and its famed gabled architecture. It is a truly relaxing way to explore the city. Amsterdam’s canals are another UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you want to avoid the crowds, consider a leisurely boat trip on Den Bosch’s Binnendieze.

Visit national parks such as De Biesbosch and the Hoge Veluwe

The Biesbosch and the Hoge Veluwe offer stunning nature and are perfect for walks, bicycle rides and canoe trips. The Hoge Veluwe is also home to the Kröller-Müller Museum, which boasts works by Van Gogh and other legendary artists.

Head to the coast

The Dutch coast has superb beaches and lively seaside resorts. When the weather is nice, many Dutch people head to the beach. It is often very busy on the roads then, so public transport offers a nice alternative to driving. On days that are a bit less sunny, you can still relax in one of the countless beach bars or enjoy a long stroll on the beach.

Visit cultural festivals

In summer, festivals to suit a range of tastes and interests abound, such as the Parade (a travelling theatre festival) and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam.

Discover Kinderdijk’s windmills

Famous for its historic windmills, Kinderdijk offers a great glimpse into Dutch water management. A visit to Kinderdijk will teach you about the history and techniques of water management that, given the country’s low elevation, are so essential to the Netherlands.

Sample Dutch cuisine at local markets and restaurants

Sample regional dishes such as herring, stroopwafels (treacle waffles), and bitterballen at markets such as Rotterdam’s indoor Markthal or Amsterdam’s Albert Cuyp open-air market. Tasting Dutch cuisine allows you to discover the culinary traditions and many flavours of the Netherlands.

Visit castles and estates such as Kasteel de Haar

Castles and estates offer a glimpse into the history and splendour of earlier times in the Netherlands. Kasteel de Haar, for example, is the largest castle in the Netherlands. It has beautiful gardens and a rich history.

With these activities and more, you will not only have a great summer, but also learn more about Dutch culture, history and nature. Have fun exploring the Netherlands!
